2014 CrossFit Games Day 2

Coming into the 2014 CrossFit Games Day 2, reigning champion Rich Froning sat on top of the leaderboard for the men, and Australian Kara Webb was in the lead for the women.

By the end of the second day, one of the two was still out in front, while the other had dropped out of the top spot.

Here’s how Day 2 unfolded at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

Triple 3

Event 3, the Triple 3, of the 2014 CrossFit Games tested the cardiovascular endurance of the athletes with a three-mile row, 300 double unders and a 3-mile run in the hot Californian sun.

While overall female leader, Webb, was first off the rower and fourth off the rope, her pace slowed on the run and she finished 21st.

Kristin Holte won the event with the winner of ‘The Beach’ Anna Tunnicliffe close behind in second.

As expected, Jason Khalipa was off the rower first for the men with Froning not far behind, but Australian Rob Forte took the lead on the double-unders and never looked back.

He went on to win the event by more than 15 seconds over Jordan Troyan who also, strangely enough, won ‘The Beach’ on Wednesday.

This was the first ever event victory for Forte in four CrossFit Games appearances.

Like Webb, Froning struggled on the run, walking at times, and was overtaken by the top finishing women and finished 37th – his worst ever placing in an Event at the CrossFit Games.

2014 CrossFit Games Day 2

Sprint Sled

The Sprint Sled event tested the athletes’ brute strength, power and sheer force of will in a test of fitness that required little skill.

The athletes were simply required to push the sled from one point to another, but the weight and a lack of gas in the tank made it surprisingly difficult.

The men’s Sprint Sled saw the expected suspects post the fastest times.

In Heat 2 Neil Maddox, one of the strongest men in the field, smashed the competition to take first overall in both sprints with Jason Khalipa and Tommy Hackenbruck sharing the honours for second and third overall in Heat 3.

Khalipa took the first sprint by a long way, but Hackenbruck took the second sprint by a yard.

In Heat 1 of the women, Emily Abbott set the time to beat in the second sprint.

In Heat 2, Lauren Brooks claimed the fastest time for sprint one for the women, but was unable to beat the times set by Abbott.

While she wouldn’t win either of the overall event, once the final heat came out all eyes were on Australian Kara Webb and her outstanding hat.

Webb finished fourth in the first sprint and third in the second, but still clearly dominated Heat 3 with no athlete able to hit the paint close to her.

Lauren Fisher struggled for the first time in the competition with the sled and was the one of just three female athletes not to finish the second sprint.

2014 CrossFit Games Day 2

21-15-9 Complex

21-15-9 Complex was fast and furious.

For the second time in the 2014 CrossFit Games, Rich Froning finished an event in first place.

There was a lot of talk in the crowd that the Complex would be Josh Bridges’ event, but the pocket-rocket was unable to beat the time set by Froning in Heat 3.

After a poor start to the day from the champ his victory has served to squash any rumours about injury or illness.

The final heat was a showdown between David and Goliath with Bridges and Khalipa going rep for rep until the dying stages.

With just the two bar muscle-ups to go, Bridges was able to get back on the bar quicker and claim a three second victory with Khalipa coming third overall.

There were no surprises in the women’s heats.

In Heat 3, all eyes were on a rep-for-rep battle between Annie Thorisdottir and Cassidy Lance, but it was neither competitor that won the heat.

2013 third fittest woman in the world Valerie Voberil snuck under the radar and snatched victory from Thorisdottir by two tenths of a second.

In the final heat gymnastics queen Camille Leblanc-Bazinet put on an impressive show on the rig to go unbroken on her sets of pull-ups, chest-to-bar pull-ups and bar muscle-ups.

Leblanc-Bazinet sent the crowd wild with each impeccable transition from chest-to-bar pull-ups to bar muscle-ups.

Current overall leader Kara Webb placed fifth.

Teams

6-Mile Relay Run

The teams started Day 2 of competition with a 6-mile relay run.

The athletes demonstrated their elite fitness level with all six athletes in the top five teams to finish hitting six-and-a-half minute miles from start to finish.

CrossFit The Club claimed victory by half a minute with CrossFit Fort Vancouver in second and CrossFit Green Bay in third.

Frantasy Land & Big Bob 100

Just four teams were able to complete Event 3, Frantasy Land.

The event tested all modes of fitness with the standard nasty girl up first before heavier weight and lower rep more gymnastically challenging variations followed.

In their second victory of the day, CrossFit The Club won Frantasy Land by more than a minute over second placed Brick Nation.

CrossFit King of Island Park placed third and CrossFit Active rounded out the four finishers.

Big Bob, the giant sled, became the arch-nemesis of the teams for the remainder of the afternoon.

Just one minute after the athletes had struggled through Frantasy Land, they found themselves bent over the metal monster, tasked with pushing it 100-yards within a three-minute cap.

CrossFit Tegen was the only team able to complete the task, crossing the finish line with only three seconds to spare.

2014 CrossFit Games Day 2

Deadlift & Big Bob 200

The Deadlift 1-rep-maxes wowed the crowd with all athletes pulling massive lifts, but it was Ayo Anise from CrossFit Invictus that sent them wild.

In the dying stages of the event she lifted an impressive 445 lb to lift the Invictus women to second, 40 lbs behind CrossFit Conjugate.

In the men, CrossFit Conjugate lifted a total of 1755 lbs to take the event, with CrossFit CDR Redlands  in second and Backcountry CrossFit in third.

After smoking their lower backs and glutes, the athletes returned to Big Bob for a 200-yard sled push and CrossFit Tegen dominated again.

The team won the event in a time of 5.13, almost 30 seconds in front of second placed CrossFit Atlanta.

CrossFit Athletic chased down NorCal CrossFit with 20-yards to go to take third.

At the end of the second day of competition just nine points separates the top five teams and the standings are as follows:

1. (434) CrossFit Invictus
2. (430) CrossFit Syndicate
3. (428) NorCal CrossFit
4. (427) CrossFit Tegen
5. (425) CrossFit Athletic

CrossFit Active sit in 5th place after Day 3 of the 2014 CrossFit Games.

The ‘Orange Army’ from Sydney, Australia is back competing at the StubHub Center after a 12th place finish at the 2013 CrossFit Games and a dominant performance at the Australia Regional this year.

Active ended the third day of competition with three top 4 placings and are now in contention to become the first affiliate from Australia to finish on the podium at the Games. So far, CrossFit Active’s best performance was in the ‘Worm Sprint’ where they finished 3rd overall.

Wesley Moss caught up with CrossFit Active in the lead up to this year’s competition to get an insight into their training.

The above video gives us a first hand look at how the team prepared for this year’s competition, and includes footage of the affiliate taking part in a ‘worm’ workout. Using heavy kettlebells CrossFit Active were able to replicate a worm, to prepare for it in the odd chance it returned in 2014. It did.

Talayna Fortunato went into the 2014 CrossFit Games as one of the favourites to finish in the top 10.

The 2012 third place finisher at the Games put in another dominant performance at the South East Regional and was every chance of placing top three again after reigning champion Sam Briggs failed to qualify.

However, Fortunato’s hopes of a podium finish were all but dashed after Day 1, with 26th and 39th placings in the first two Events. The 33 year-old also appeared to be struggling with an injury in her right leg.

We caught up with Talayna Fortunato after Day 3 of the 2014 CrossFit Games after she had slipped to 32nd place on the leaderboard.

She spoke about the injury that has hampered her Games performance, her thoughts on this year’s competition and her expectations on the final day of competition.

2014 CrossFit Games Day 3

The 2014 CrossFit Games Day 3 brought everything spectators could want with upsets and phenomenal performances in almost every event.

Kara Webb and Noah Ohlsen sat on top of the leaderboard coming into the day, but a leaderboard shake up was to come.

Muscle-Up Biathalon

Women

Coming into the event, high expectations were placed on the shoulders of Camille LeBlanc-Bazinet to go unbroken on the three sets of muscle-ups.

While it was a huge ask, her reputation as a gymnastics queen has been well established.

In Heat 2, Tiffany Hendrickson set the time to beat of 15.08, but LeBlanc-Bazinet was unable to come close it in the final heat.

LeBlanc-Bazinet broke her muscle-ups multiple times which resulted in extra penalty runs before finishing in a time of 16.09.

It was enough to put her on top of the leaderboard as Kara Webb struggled with a 25th placed finish.

Men

The crowd was far from disappointed with three men going unbroken on all the muscle-ups.

As expected, Games veteran Chris Spealler performed exceptionally well in this event, but it was yet another rookie who took the day.

In Heat 1 Cody Anderson set a smoking time of 10.43 that wouldn’t be beaten, despite a great attempt from Ben Smith who finished in 11.15 and Spealler who finished in 11.17.

Surprisingly, none of the top three times came from the final heat with none of the sport’s biggest names able to hold onto the rings.

Overall leader Noah Ohlsen won the final heat and finished fifth.

2014 CrossFit Games Day 3

Sprint Carry

Women

Yet another rookie stole the veterans’ thunder with Lauren Brooks taking out the women’s sprint carry by almost three seconds.

Brooks outpaced Christy Adkins on the final unweighted sprint and hung onto her lead as she raced the 100 lb cylinder down the field to win in a time of 2.47.

None of the women from the final heat were able to crack the top three overall, with Brooks, Adkins and Mandi Janowitz all in Heat 2.

Crowd favourite and former champion Annie Thorisdottir took fifth and Webb placed ninth.

Men

Like the women, the top time of the event wouldn’t come from the big names in the final heat.

There was no finesse required to win the Sprint Carry, but the technically excellent Nate Schrader was the clear winner of the event with a time of 2.22 in the first heat.

Games veteran and known workhorse Tommy Hackenbruck took second in a time of 2.33 with Will Moorad coming in third at 2.35.

2014 CrossFit Games Day 3

Clean Speed Ladder

Women

The Clean Speed Ladder was a crowd favourite with big lifts coming fast and furious from athletes in all heats.

Unsurprisingly, three of the top four finishers in last year’s Clean and Jerk found themselves at the top of the ladder with Elisabeth Akinwale first to finish the 225 lb max weight in 1.09.

Amanda Goodman, the winner of Clean and Jerk, finished in 1.26 and Webb claimed third.

Men

The roar in the stadium was deafening when the men took to the barbells.

Event winner Neal Maddox displayed incredible strength and power to beat rookie Jeff Evans onto the mat.

Mathew Fraser, who came equal first in the Overhead Squat on Wednesday, took third.

The support of the crowd made the difference between a successful lift or afailed lift for many of the athletes, including the lightest man on the floor Chris Spealler.

Spealler did not progress beyond the first round, but the weight started at almost 100 lbs over his bodyweight.

With the very vocal support of the crowd, Spealler was able to clean 275 lbs to clear the first ladder, but his time wasn’t good enough for him to progress to the semi-final.

2014 CrossFit Games Day 3

Push Pull

Women

Strict handstand push-ups proved a killer for many of the women after a brutal opening three days of competition.

The strict handstand push-up is a movement that once lost through muscle fatigue it’s hard to recover.

Michele Letendre took the event in 5.00 with the second fastest time coming from Heat 1.

Nicole Holcomb destroyed the competition in the opening heat to finish in 5.10.

LeBlanc-Bazinet finished second in the top heat but, with Kara Webb unable to finish, it was enough to give her a 70-point buffer on the leaderboard.

2014 CrossFit Games Day 3

Men

After missing the final on Clean Speed Ladder, Froning entered the event with a point to prove.

From the first set of handstand push-ups Froning and Bridges went rep-for-rep in a battle for victory.

Bridges took the event by 2 seconds in a time of 4.46 with Froning a close second and the result was enough to move them both into the top three.

Ben Stoneberg finished third in 5.03.

At the end of Day 3 the leaderboard is as follows:

Women:

1. (700) Camille Leblanc-Bazinet
2. (625) Kara Webb
3. (583) Annie Thorisdottir
4. (582) Michele Letendre
5. (581) Valerie Voboril

Men:

1. (625) Rich Froning
2. (620) Mathew Fraser
3. (613) Josh Bridges
4. (597) Noah Ohlsen
5. (589) Tommy Hackenbruck

Josh Bridges 7

Teams:

NorCal CrossFit has taken the biggest lead we’ve seen so far by the end of a day of competition.

They sit 22 points above CrossFit Invictus with CrossFit Marysville another 24 points behind.

Triples Chipper

The day started with the Triples Chipper with few teams performing equally across both the males and females.

CrossFit FDR Redlands won the men’s and CrossFit Green Bay took out the women’s.

Squat Burpee

The teams then moved into the Squat Burpee where they were required to carry the 405lb worm and perform movements synchronized.

It was an event that rewarded sensible pacing and a solid athlete engine. Timberwolf CrossFit worked steadily to take the final heat and the event in 14.02, more than 20 seconds faster than second placed CrossFit Fort Vancouver.

Worm Sprint

Explosive power was put to the test in the worm sprint with each individual athlete sent on a 100-yard sprint before the team sprinted the worm 100-yards.

The event was over in less than three minutes and any teams with slower runners quickly found themselves out of contention.

CrossFit Marysville claimed victory in 1.59.

At the end of Day 3, the standings are as follows:

1. (724) NorCal CrossFit
2. (702) CrossFit Invictus
3. (688) CrossFit Marysville
4. (679) CrossFit 808
5. (665) CrossFit Active

Camille Leblanc Bazinet 2014 CrossFit Games Podium

The 2014 CrossFit Games Day 4 is over and the fittest on earth have been crowned.

After 13 grueling events over four days, Camille Leblanc-Bazinet and Rich Froning have proven themselves to be the best in the world.

Froning comes as almost no surprise with 2014 his fourth consecutive victory, but for Leblanc-Bazinet, it has been the culmination of five years of hard work and near misses.

Midline March

Women

The Midline March was a continuation of Annie Thorisdottir’s hunt for the top of the podium.

She started the day 100 points behind Camille LeBlanc-Bazinet, but a first place finish on the event helped her move up the leaderboard.

Leblanc-Bazinet finished sixth with Emily Bridgers taking second and Becca Voigt third.

The event also marked the end of Kara Webb’s 2014 CrossFit Games campaign after she withdrew with injury.

Men

Going into the event, the men’s leaderboard was locked worse than peak hour traffic.

After a 37th placed finish on Triple Three earlier in the competition, Rich Froning came into the final day with purpose.

Froning smashed through the three rounds to finish more than thirty seconds ahead of second placed Mathew Fraser with Tommy Hackenbruck claiming third.

2014 CrossFit Games Day 4

Thick ‘N Quick & Double Grace

Women

Thorisdottir continued her push for first with a dominant display in the final heat of the women, but the event went to Jenn Jones in Heat 2 who finished two seconds faster.

Emily Carothers took third and Leblanc-Bazinet came 12th.

Going into the final workout of the day, an upset looked possible, but it wasn’t to be.

While Thorisdottir put on a phenomenal display to take first in the second event, Double Grace, it wasn’t enough with Leblanc-Bazinet coming in fifth to hold onto first place.

Leblanc-Bazinet was the most consistent performer over the four days of competition and deservedly was crowned the fittest on earth.

Valerie Voboril came second with Michelle Kinney racing her to the finish mat for third.

2014 CrossFit Games Day 4

Men

There was to be no stopping Rich Froning.

In what was a very short, sharp event, Froning powered through his rope climbs and pumped out the ultra-heavy overhead squats to march onto the mat for a 19 second victory over second placed Mathew Fraser.

Ben Smith joined them on the mat four seconds later.

Thick ‘N Quick was the end of Noah Ohlsen’s first place aspirations.

He finished tied for 17th going into the final event.

Froning again dominated the competition to take victory in Double Grace to take his total to five first place finishes over the four days.

Jason Khalipa was the only man in the final heat able to come close to Froning to take second.

After a video circulated in the two weeks preceding the Games of Dan Bailey doing Grace unbroken in 1.02, the crowd had high expectations of the Southern Californian and he delivered with a third place finish.

Rich Froning 2014 CrossFit Games Podium

At the end of competition, the results are as follows:

Women:

1. (918) Camille Leblanc-Bazinet
2. (878) Annie Thorisdottir
3. (793) Julie Foucher
4. (787) Michele Letendre
5. (780) Valerie Voboril

Men:

1. (925) Rich Froning
2. (875) Mathew Fraser
3. (844) Jason Khalipa
4. (786) Josh Bridges
5. (782) Scott Panchik

Teams

At the start of the final day of competition, just 16 points separated the top five teams.

The stage was set for an epic battle of strength and determination and what followed didn’t disappoint.

The second last event was the Team 50s, which no team was able to finish.

Four teams came within 20 repetitions, but the ask was just too much.

Coming into the final workout, just nine points separated the top three teams with one workout to decide the fittest affiliate in the world.

While Timberwolf CrossFit took first place in the workout, it was CrossFit Invictus who took out the 2014 CrossFit Games Affiliate Cup with a third place finish.

At the end of competition, the top five affiliates in the world are as follows:

1. (935) CrossFit Invictus
2. (916) CrossFit Conjugate
3. (911) CrossFit Marysville
4. (889) Timberwolf CrossFit
5. (887) NorCal CrossFit
